Eating Healthy When Your Family is Not

Having support in your whole food weight loss journey is critical for success. After all, some aspects of this journey are not just going to be bumpy, they are going to be downright hard. What makes things even harder is when you feel like you are on this journey alone, especially when you are not able to share this journey with the ones you love the most…your family.

 

While it is a good idea not to force your family to follow the same healthy eating path that you are on, it doesn’t make it any less difficult for you when you have to walk this journey on your own. But there is good news, there are a few simple tricks that can help you to maintain your new eating lifestyle while keeping your family well fed with the foods they are used to. And believe it or not, you won’t need to spend hours in the kitchen each night to make this work for you.

 

Practice Batch Cooking

One of the easiest ways to save your sanity when you are the only one in your household who is on a whole foods journey is to learn how to batch cook. Essentially, batch cooking is when you take one day out of the week and prep or cook all of your meals for the week. While it seems like a huge undertaking, and it can be, it will greatly reduce the stress you feel when prepping and cooking two separate meals each night of the week. Batch cooking is also something you can get the whole family in on, allowing younger kids to feel like they have had a hand in making their own meals and giving the older kids a skill that they can keep with them as they become adults.

 

Make Freeze Ahead Meals

Finding meals that you are able to freeze can be a bit tricky in the beginning, especially when you are just getting your feet wet with eating whole foods. But that doesn’t mean that it can’t be done. With sites like Pinterest, Yummly, and Instagram, having recipes at your fingertips is easier than it has ever been before. Once you have selected a few meals that work well for you and your family, you can make it part of your weekly routine to cook and freeze these meals once a week. This will make your dinners as easy as pulling out the latest freezer meal and popping it into the oven.

 

Start Your Meal Prep the Night Before

If you find yourself faced with meals that cannot be frozen, then you might have to get a bit crafty with your meal prep. A good way to do this is to get into the habit of doing some light prep each night for the next day’s meal. Some easy things you can do are make mixes, cut up vegetables, start marinating meats, measuring out ingredients, and putting everything next to each other, (for example cold ingredients will go together in the fridge and all other ingredients can be put together on the counter). The great thing about doing this is that you will quickly come to a place where you spend very little time preparing the current night’s meal and while that meal is cooking you will be working on the prep work for the next night.

 

For many people, one of the most stressful times of the day is dinnertime. After working all day, running errands, and helping kids with homework the thought of making dinner can seem overwhelming to say the least. And that feeling of overwhelm only gets worse when you are on a different eating path from the rest of your family. Following these simple tips will help you save a bit of time, and a bit of sanity, when cooking a whole food and non-whole food dinner each night.
